What activity is more popular?

by Ayan Ibrahim, Grade 8, Summit Alternative School, Ottawa, Ontario

Ayan made a tally sheet, then a frequency table of the class’ favorite activities: snowboarding ( 5), skateboarding (3) , dance or drama (1) hockey (4), volleyball (2) , badmington (1) other (3) soccer (3), swimming (2) , karate or other martial arts (1). He then created a bar graph of the number of students that chose each activity and a circle graph of the percentages. He felt that the circle graph was better because it was easier and less baffling than the bar graph, which was harder to make accurate. He concluded that the most popular activity in his class was snowboarding, which he could tell from the frequency chart but he made two graphs just to make sure.
