by Michael Taylor, Grade 8, Summit Alternative School, Ottawa, Ontario
Michael made a tally sheet and a frequency table of the different activity choices, as well as a table showing percentages and corresponding degrees of a circle. He created a bar chart of the number of students that chose each activity and circle chart showing the percentages. He described his circle graph like this: “It displays data that is part of a whole. In this case, the whole is our class 8-1 (25 people). This graph makes it easy to see that the most popular activity is snowboarding. 20% or 1 in 5 chose showboarding.” He felt that the circle graph was more effective at displaying the information than the bar graph “because our class is a whole”.
